Safety Tips For Driving an RV at Night

Driving through the night is hard enough, but it’s extra challenging when you’re towing an RV or behind the wheel of a motorhome. Of course, sometimes you just don’t have a choice in the matter. These tips from Jubilee R.V. Centre can help keep yourself and others safe while driving your RV at night.

Never Drive While You’re Tired

Fatigue reduces your reaction times and makes it more difficult to concentrate. Rotate drivers to give whoever is behind the wheel some time to take a nap. If there are no fully rested and alert drivers available, pull over somewhere and get a little rest. It’s much better than continuing and risking an accident.

Interior Lighting

Interior lighting can be a dangerous source of distraction to those operating a tow vehicle or motorhome at night. Be sure to turn off or dim these interior lights to make things easier on whoever is driving. You should also shut off any light-emitting electronics if possible.

Watch The Road For Animals

Nocturnal animals are much more active during the nighttime. Your chances of hitting a raccoon or deer are much greater after the sun goes down. This is particularly true in rural or heavily forested areas. Pay extra attention when riding through these areas and watch for roads marked as animal crossings. If you do see an animal, press on the brakes. If you swerve, you may lose control of the vehicle.

Add More Exterior Lighting

If you know that you’ll have to do a lot of RV driving or hauling at night, or you’re otherwise concerned about night driving, install some exterior lighting. You can also upgrade your headlights. This will make it easier for you to see and ensure that other people can see you clearly. However, you need to make sure that your lights don’t blind other drivers.
